Mira Burmeister-Rudolph published her article “Advancing emigrants’ rights in India: strategies of civil society in spaces for engagement” in Globalizations. In this article, she examines the initiatives taken by Indian civil society to promote the rights of migrant Indian laborers engaged in low-wage employment abroad, as a response to the shortcomings of the institutionalized rights framework within global and national governance of labor migration. The article analyzes the multi-level and multi-stakeholder strategies in spaces for engagement, utilizing original qualitative data to demonstrate that civil society organizations play a pivotal role in (e)migration governance in India and are essential to understand the state’s migration policies. Furthermore, Burmeister-Rudolph shows that local and subnational levels, in particular, prove to be crucial entry points for civil society organizations to advance their agendas within migrant-origin states.
